Dr. Maria J. Alvarez is a bilingual (Espanol/ English) bicultural Latina. She holds a combined doctoral degree in counseling psychology and school psychology from the University of California in Santa Barbara.
Dr. Alvarez is a licensed psychologist (PSY 21594) with training and clinical experience with the following issues/populations: early childhood mental health, child and adolescent psychology, parenting children with special needs, traditional and alternative (gay/lesbian/foster/adoptive) family issues, high-stress families impacted by poverty/multiple-stressors, families at risk for family violence, identity issues including sexual orientation and ethnic/racial identity development, high-risk pregnancy, post-partum depression, infertility issues, the adoption process, grief/loss, depression, bi-polar disorders, anxiety, women''''s issues, recovery from rape, sexual abuse and/or family violence, immigration-related post traumatic stress, acculturation issues, and thriving while raising and/or living with a mentally ill child/partner/relative.
Dr. Alvarez also has extensive experience providing career (interest/ability), psychological (personality), cognitive (IQ),neuropsychological (ages 3 through 16), and psycho-educational evaluations for English and Spanish speaking individuals. Dr. Alvarez'''' academic training and diverse experiences make her uniquely qualified to assess, diagnose, and treat children/adolescents with academic, socio-emotional, behavioral, and developmental vulnerabilities. Dr. Alvarez'''' school-based expertise include psycho-educational assessment and intervention targeting learning disabilities, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), behavior difficulties, and a wide range of other conditions that may impede a child''''s academic potential. Dr. Alvarez'''' experience as a former educator, training in special education laws, and experience as a school psychologist makes her a very effective child advocate in special education negotiations.
Through her work at the UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families, and Communities, within the TIES for Adoption Program, Dr. Alvarez has assisted many adoptive children and their families in successfully navigating the complex challenges of the adoption process while creating a healthy family system.
Dr. Alvarez is in private practice in Cloverdale.
